Health Care
For Representative Samantha Steckloff, the fight for affordable, accessible health care is deeply personal.
Sam battled breast cancer at a time when many people her age were just beginning their careers and building their futures. That experience gave her firsthand insight into the financial and emotional strain that so many families face when dealing with serious illness. She understands what it means to stay in a job simply because it provides health insurance, and what it feels like to work through pain, stress, and uncertainty because the bills still have to be paid.
Those experiences continue to drive Sam’s commitment to building a health care system that works for every Michigander. She believes no one should have to choose between a trip to the doctor, life-saving prescriptions, and their groceries.
In Lansing, Sam has been a leader in advancing policies that lower costs, expand access, and protect patient rights. She championed legislation to increase transparency around prescription drug pricing through her drug transparency legislation, helping hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for rising costs. She also led efforts to ensure oral chemotherapy treatments are covered by health insurance, making lifesaving cancer care more affordable and accessible for patients across Michigan.
Sam has fought to protect access to affordable health coverage and codifying the Affordable Care Act in Michigan law to preserve protections for people with preexisting conditions and ensure coverage for essential health benefits. She has also been a strong advocate for protecting reproductive freedom and keeping reproductive health care legal and accessible in Michigan.
Her work on fertility and family-building rights has made Sam a recognized leader on these issues nationwide. Through the Michigan Family Protection Act, she helped modernize Michigan law by protecting parentage rights and legalizing surrogacy, ensuring families created through assisted reproduction have equal legal protections under the law.
Most recently, Sam introduced legislation to require private health insurance plans to cover IVF and other assisted reproductive services, helping more families access the care they need to build the futures they dream of.
Sam believes health care should be affordable, compassionate, and comprehensive, and that every Michigander deserves access to quality care, regardless of their income, background, or medical history. From lowering prescription drug costs to protecting reproductive rights and expanding fertility coverage, she remains committed to putting people first and building a healthier Michigan for everyone.

Bringing her passion and expertise in education to Lansing, she has worked tirelessly to strengthen Michigan’s schools at every level. Through her work on the School Aid Appropriations Subcommittee, she has helped deliver transformative investments in students and classrooms across the state.
Sam supported providing free breakfast and lunch to all students, secured record per-pupil funding for schools, and fought to expand Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Dual Enrollment programs so students can gain valuable skills and college experience before graduation.
As the former Chair of Higher Education, Sam championed major initiatives designed to reduce the financial barriers facing students and families. Her leadership contributed to programs like free community college opportunities, Michigan Reconnect, and the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, creating more pathways for students to pursue college, career training, and long-term success.
